DO YOU REMEMBER THE BEES IN THE 1930s AND 1940s? ALBERT DOES.

97 year old BU member Albert French first went to Griffin Park in 1934. Now he’s been to our new stadium with his family and carer for the Chelsea game. We’re hoping Albert is going to be one of the first interviewees in a new Bees history project.

Albert’  first match at Griffin Park was against Blackpool on 17 March 1934 which according to his son David ‘he remembers as though it was yesterday, we won 1-0 . That was when we were in the old Second Division BEFORE we went up to the First Division for the first time! 😲  So he’s an old hand at this top flight lark!🤣’

We wrote about Albert last December and this season David French let us know “My Dad is stronger now and I’m exploring the possibility of getting him to the Chelsea match.  It would be amazing for him to see us play the Champions of Europe for his first match at the BCS and 87 years since his first at GP in 1934!😲’

The club helped get Albert a special place for the game and David reported back afterwards; ‘ My Dad’s trip to his first top-flight Brentford game for three quarters of a century went off fantastically well, thank you so much for arranging.  It was so much fun and what a match to see, despite the result.  The seats on the disability platform were amazing!   Incredible that my Dad got to see his beloved Brentford again after his ‘near death’ experiences last year.   We heard Stu’s mention of my Dad before the match and the icing on the cake was Charlie McDonald coming up to say hello.Very proud of the club to have got us where we are today in a brilliant new stadium going toe to toe with the Champions of Europe!😲’

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Are you a supporter or do you know of a supporter like Albert who saw Brentford play at Griffin Park in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Did you see the team play in the old first  division? Did you see the last games before World War II was declared?

Bees United would like to record those memories for posterity, by speaking to those supporters for our heritage project. If you would like to take part, please send an email to bfcmem@btinternet.com  giving your name and contact details and we will be touch. We are prepared to come to you if you would prefer. These memories would then be used in future heritage projects.
